Unity must be found in the Scriptures. Confessions can be quite good, but I wonder if Christians get the idea that they’re a complete summary of the Bible. Expository preaching is good, but often Christians can’t see the forest for the trees, and topical preaching can be useful for that reason. Some reformed Christians I know believe that someone cannot be both covenantal and baptist (that is, the proper subject of baptism is the believer). They are wed to confessions and not the Bible. For another example, there are Christians who believe witchcraft is not real because it’s not mentioned in the confessions. They wouldn’t say that, but it’s true. The Bible talks about witchcraft as something real (and sinful, of course).

Our world has lots of teachers and leaders. We have 1) men who teach the bible in all its complexity of morality, lessons, history, cosmology, spiritual and earthly realities etc. 2) men who are deceptive leaders who teach what they want for their own sake. Bc of ego, pride, financial greed, position and power etc. 3) men who teach a culture/tradition that was handed down to them which usually has both right and error rolled in at different points, such is the nature of cultures and traditions. 4) men who teach what we want and care most about, that is what our itching ears and souls long for, and the concerns of our own hearts. That is usually basic human topics that pertain to our own lives, marriages, raising kids, and working jobs ect. 5) men who teach what is good, that is categorically good: moral virtues, emotive ideals, and great-making properties. Noble stories and topics that imbue people with a moral compass and sentiment of love of others. So we have bible teachers, self-promoters, tradition advocates, prosperity gurus, and virtue proponents MacArther and Bauchan are both traditional advocates, for their respective traditions. both are more aligned with each other then they might be with the multitudes of other traditions in the world.

If you substitute Islam for Christian it sounds like an Ayatollah in Iran. Christian sharia law. A person’s relationship with the creator is very personal. God doesn’t need you to force whatever laws you think are correct for Him. He doesn’t need you to be a mouthpiece. God can speak to us directly. God gave us free will for a reason. Plus you are only human. You do not have all the answers. How pretentious to think you know the one and only desires of God. God is too big for one religion. Free will means we get to choose for ourselves. America was founded on Freedom of Religion, meaning people came here to avoid the persecution of refusing to believe and practice their home country’s official religion. How pretentious of you! How long it takes to get to the point!

Sounds like a good opportunity for a Christian social media platform. Maybe call it "Boroughs" or something like that. Have churches in towns register, with their people online as well. Let them say "yeah, we have this level of personnel, we're in this part of the world, economic conditions here are like this, the housing market here is like this, we need these types of people, and here are our doctrines." The goal here being to facilitate this gathering together and engaging in these covenants and making it easier for people to pick a borough because you have a list of boroughs that's well defined.

I fully admit to not buying these arguments. In my opinion there is an internal tension with this sermon. Joel mentioned wanting unbelievers to come to church and also believers to be in covenant beyond mere attendance. This would create 2 groups of people, the revolving door of attendees and the core group. Joel as much as you lambasted Calvary chapel, they have resolved the tension by eliminating church membership. So the question I put you is do you want a high walled/bouncers at the door church which you earnestly seek to the mirror the invisible body of the church? Basically reflect the elect in the pews. Or do you want an open church and mixed body? What does scripture say about that? I know you'll come back with this as a false choice, I retort that the tension creates the mismatched limbs and lack of assembly you lament.

Actually, you forgot to mention 2 other differences. 1= God can not break his own commandments, he broke the Lust-rape-covet law when he raped mary while she was twelve and actually bought fairly by Joseph and they were wed, so god committed adultery. 2= God can not break his own commandment by having a son because it created another god which as we know from past and present that jesus has been put on higher pedestal as god, so that means god created another god and has a god before him. @RightResponseMinistries one of the issues we run into is that even "Reformed" churches have abandoned Bible study. Most of the "sermons" in the modern church (reformed included) are little more than blog posts with superficial topics. It has been almost 20 years since I've heard of an elder leading a Bible study, and I have never seen any church where the lead pastor was teaching a rigorous Bible study for men he was training within the church. I appreciate your call for a consolidation, but how do we either 1) get these lay-deacons who have called themselves "elders/pastors" to give up their small kingdoms or 2) get Christians to give up the cotton-candy-Christianity of the modern 501c3 to return to deep fellowship and rigorous study of the Word of God? Some days, I feel like Jeremiah in his commission from God when I speak to churches who consider themselves "reformed" or "conservative."

Is the church led by Pastor Webbon a 501 C 3 incorporated church? If so, how does that fall in line with the statement "a church at its most basic level is word and sacrament." Where are the incorporation documents in Scripture? Which 1st through 19th century churches were incorporated as institutions of the state? I mean this with all respect but I don't see in scripture anywhere that the physical church is to be joined with the state. True church membership is not membership in a corporation whose member rolls are used as a census of sorts. If Pastor Webbon's church is not a 501 C 3, then please forgive me for making that assumption.

Westminster disagrees with Savoy and 1689 on church government because they have fundamentally different ideas on the nature of the church. That difference is much more significant than church government. On the sacraments, Westminster and Savoy are in full agreement, but the 1689 is different in ways that seem subtle but are actually quite significant. Westminster and 1689 are both ambiguous on eschatology, but Savoy is explicitly postmil. The difference not mentioned here is covenant theology, probably the most significant reason why it's historically and theologically irresponsible to call the 1689 a Reformed confession. There are historic debates within covenant theology in the Reformed world, but they are on secondary and tertiary issues (again, historically. There are modern proposals that are radical departures from historic Reformed covenant theology). All Reformed churches agreed on the basic structure of the covenants. Thus, Westminster and Savoy agree in their covenant theology. The 1689 and 1689 Federalism borrow Reformed terminology but completely revise Reformed covenant theology such that it loses its Reformed nature and takes on a distinctly Baptist character. All this isn't even to mention the seemingly small but really stupid changes 1689 makes such as cutting the "good and necessary consequence" clause from chapter 1.

The problem is always in the details. For example, should we view the Federal Vision as a heresy that directly attacks the Gospel or is it just adiaphora?

'membership' is a vestige of the state church. Not really a biblical thing. Pastor not a biblical title, hireling is.

One issue, in reality is that I did a survey of Old and New Testament at home. My Church doesn't do that for kids. I've tried and I am still trying to go through the Heidelburg, but my teens struggle to get it, even some of it is overly complex to me. I'm doing that on my own though. My Church is expository, but we may take 20+ weeks to get through Nehemiah. I try to give the big picture overview through regular Bible reading. Sometimes I feel in over my head and my church doesn't seem to have anything to assist me for me to assist my kids. I'm glad I grew up listening to RC Sproul on the radio and had the "everyone should be a theologian" idea because I can do a lot more than most of my other friends as they have never gotten those real basics down. Reformed Churches are very rare where I'm at. Most congregants never hear things that get talked about in theology podcasts like this. I think unity can come from Churches focusing on teaching Christians to be Christians and not making most all Sundays just a change to outreach to the lost as the primary point of every service. Bring back Sunday school before the Service or on Sunday night or mid-week. When I was a kid, my old Church did that, and it was so great. I bet that helped my dad bring me up a lot and helped my parents and our family be seen a lot more by the pastor and deacons and that had to assist in shepherding us.

Good luck, gentlemen. If the giants of reformed faith, RC Sproul and John MacArthur could not come to agreement on baptism, I am a bit skeptical you will have success. Someone will have to deny deeply held convictions. The Ligonier model of unity seems to work very well.

The Church needs an authority to appeal to….. like a Council of Bishops maybe? lol Eastern Orthodox, but I am an admirer of Pastor Webbon on certain topics. God be with you all and may you all come into unity with the Church that Christ established. Have a wonderful day!

Mr Reece, with all due respect, from your Twitter account it seems like you wouldn’t be willing to unite with other Calvinistic believers that don’t agree with you on certain secondary issues. Would you unite with a pastor that goes out to eat on Sundays or watches football on Sundays? Would you unite with churches that use instruments for music on Sundays and sing more than just psalms?

My opinion and the public opinion of many people already known is illegal. What certainly can be done to make clear that the national holiday of "Thanksgiving" is a day for humidity, respect to "Divine Provadance," and repentance for crimes public and private. Also, the States separatly as Governments should let and encourage institutions of education use whatever version voluntary classes of the Pentateuch and Christian Bible as educational and literature studies of whatever kind fits community standards. That should be acceptable to most people.
